NEW DELHI: Indians receive the highest number of annoying phone calls with someone trying to sell them financial services and goods, according to a survey by LocalCircles.
SMS spams sent by banks, insurance brokers, car dealerships, spa services, real estate agents and lately income opportunities have continued to annoy citizens.
While 8% of Indians report receiving calls regarding “Providing health care/pathology services”, 3% receive calls “Offering a job/earning”, 1% said “Providing services such as repair of reverse osmosis, spa, beauty, etc.”, and 3% answered “Provide a mobile number, better communication/mobile data plans, etc.” The majority of 51% reported receiving “Financial Services Sales” calls and 29% “Real Estate Sales” calls.
Worse still, on a global basis, 64% of Indians receive an average of 3 or more spam calls on their mobile every day.
The number of annoying calls is on the rise even though the Ministry of Telecommunications in July 2021 proposed measures to act against unsolicited text messages sent to citizens’ telephone numbers. However, the threat of Unwanted Commercial Communications (UCC) continues unabated and over the past 9 months LocalCircles has received a large number of complaints about unwanted phone calls.
India is one of the most spammed countries in the world as citizens receive an average of nearly 17 spam calls per user per month, as claimed by a caller ID app, Truecaller.
To quantify what citizens are currently experiencing regarding unsolicited phone calls, LocalCircles conducted a nationwide survey, which received over 37,000 responses from citizens residing in 377 districts of India. And get this: 95% of mobile subscribers who signed up for the Do Not Disturb (DND) list say they still get annoying, unwanted phone calls to their number.
Their survey showed that the two main ways Indians deal with annoying or unwanted calls are picking up the call and then either blocking the caller or telling them not to call again.
The decision to impose fines may deter spammers from sending unsolicited text messages and calls to consumers, but its success will depend on the enforcement mechanism and how easy it is for consumers to report these unwanted text messages and calls.
As indicated in the survey by LocalCircles published on June 12, 2021, collecting responses from over 9,000 citizens located in 289 districts of India, 89% of citizens said that the preferred way to report UCC would be to “transmit the message to a centralized system”. Number”. This means that users want a very simple mechanism to be able to forward spam text messages to a centralized number.
“The telecom service provider set up and the DOT system should be smarter and instead determine the sender details based on the text message. The DOT should request the details of all these senders from the service provider telecommunications and the base that issues penalty notices Expecting a user to take the time to find the senders company name and then send a complaint in a prescribed format just won’t work not and will have a very limited impact,” said Sachin Taparia, founder of LocalCircles.

Industry-wide mobile number porting hit a six-month high in March 2022, with 9.64 million subscribers submitting requests to switch carriers. According to the analysis carried out by JM Financial, the churn rate has been increasing since October 2021 (7.29 million). The industry saw a 2.35 million increase in monthly churn between October 2021 and March 2022.

According to ICICI’s Securities Report, “Industry carry was 9.7 million as of Mar 22. MNP churn was 0.8% (vs. 0.8% Feb 22) . »

According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s March 2022 Telecom Subscribers Report, in March, 9.64 million subscribers submitted Mobile Number Portability (MNP) applications, bringing the applications accumulated to 689.76 million at the end of March against 680.1 million at the end of February. .

Demotivation of carrying

It comes even as carriers such as Vodafone Idea dissuaded users on the lowest tier from porting their number by not allowing outgoing messages on the cheapest plan. TRAI, and later the Telecommunications Dispute Resolution and Appeals Tribunal, ruled in March that Vodafone Idea should also provide outbound SMS service on its lowest rate plans.

Mobile number portability, monthly chart

Mobile number portability, monthly chart

Peeyush Vaish, partner and head of the telecommunications sector at Deloitte, suggests that the reason for the increase in churn rates is due to the opening up of travel and relocation in the post-Covid world.

Vaish said: “As the Covid lockdown opens and people move to different geographies, they are switching carriers in order to get better connectivity. Especially since in the past 2-3 years, India has moved from a dual SIM market to each subscriber having a single mobile plan.

‘Steady beat’

However, another expert says churn is still quite low, even after the six-month increase in mobile portability requests. According to the expert, the churn rate is quite stable considering a market with three operators.

In March 2022, Bharti Airtel gained 2.34 million subscribers, Reliance Jio gained 1.55 million subscribers and Vodafone Idea lost 2.80 mobile subscribers.

NEW YORK — A few years ago, my best friend texted me to admit she was worried about her texting. Her hands and fingers ached throughout the day, and the pain worsened when she used her smartphone. Could our incessant texting about parenthood and politics be the culprit?

There is not yet a lot of research on the effects that smartphone use can have on the body. “We don’t know much,” said Dr. Jessica B. Schwartz, a New York-based physical therapist and spokesperson for the American Physical Therapy Association.

But she and the doctors I spoke with said they were seeing more patients than ever with pain as well as joint and soft tissue conditions such as tendinitis in the fingers, thumbs, wrists, elbows , neck, shoulders and upper back – and that cell phones were probably playing a role.

When we text friends or browse the internet on our phones, we often use our muscles and joints in ways that strain them, Dr. Schwartz said. Looking at our phones, as well as holding them in our hands with our wrists bent while we scroll or text, forces our joints and muscles to do things they weren’t evolved to do: stay in one position for too long. , holding too much weight and repeatedly moving through a short range of motion.

These positions and movements can put “excessive forces” on joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments “that are simply not used to being held in this position for so long”, said specialist Dr Renee Enriquez. in physical medicine and rehabilitation at UT Southwestern. Dallas Medical Center. Over time, these actions can cause inflammation, leading to pain and other problems, she said.

Not all doctors are aware of these risks. When my friend saw her GP about her hand pain, she had x-rays and blood tests and was told she had no arthritis. When she asked if her smartphone could be causing the pain, her doctor said it was unlikely.

She then saw another doctor, who ruled out carpal tunnel syndrome, and finally an orthopedic hand specialist, who laughed and said no when she asked – again – if her phone might be contributing to her pain .

Still, Dr. Schwartz said my friend’s symptoms were consistent with tendonitis – inflammation of the thick cords called tendons that attach muscle to bone – or tenosynovitis, inflammation of the wall of the sheath that surrounds the tendons.

Studies have linked tenosynovitis of the thumb, called de Quervain’s tenosynovitis, to frequent smartphone use. Phone use could also make symptoms worse in people who already have arthritis. She told me that while so-called smartphone pinky is not an established condition, using your pinky finger to support the weight of your phone could lead to problems.

SIGNS OF PROBLEMS TO COME

In addition to pain that could come from inflammation of ligaments, joints, muscles, tendons and their sheaths, people can experience acute smartphone-related injuries. Dr. Jennifer Moriatis Wolf, an orthopedic hand surgeon at the Medical University of Chicago, said she’s seen patients who sprained their thumbs because they grabbed their phones so hard.

Frequent phone use can also affect our nerves. When we hold our phones in front of us with our elbows bent, we compress the ulnar nerve, which runs from the neck to the hand. This constriction can cause numbness and weakness in the little and ring fingers, Dr. Schwartz said.

More generally, when muscles, tendons or ligaments become inflamed from smartphone use, they can swell, which compresses the nerves running through them and leads to pain or numbness, Dr. Enriquez said. Cell phone use could also exacerbate pre-existing nerve problems, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, Dr. Wolf added. Then there’s the strain smartphones can put on our eyes and the disruption blue light can cause to our sleep cycles.

“Text neck” is another term you may have heard. Consider what happens when you bend over to look at your phone: Compared to keeping your head up, this bent position increases the force exerted on your neck muscles and cervical spine by a factor of four or five, a said Dr. Jason M. Cuéllar, spinal orthopedic specialist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and JFK North Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida.

This excessive force, he said, can weaken spinal ligaments over time and cause pain. A 2017 study found a link between texting and persistent neck, shoulder and upper back pain, although other studies have not found a link.

The cervical spines of some young patients Dr. Cuéllar sees are also abnormally bent. It could also be linked to frequent smartphone use, he said, and could increase the risk of back problems.

“What we think is that this leads to accelerated disc degeneration,” he said, referring to the deterioration of spinal discs, small shock absorbers placed between the vertebrae to help us move around comfortably. . “We’re seeing more younger people, in their 20s, often 30s, with cervical spine issues.”

HOW TO REDUCE TENSION

What should you do if your phone is causing you pain or you are worried about it happening? Although my friend’s doctors dismissed the idea that her phone had something to do with her aching hands, she eventually got rid of her large smartphone and bought a smaller one to see if it would help. She also started using a voice-to-text option to reduce pressure on her fingers. Her pain quickly dissipated.

Dr Schwartz agreed that downsizing to a smaller, lighter phone might be a good idea if you have small hands and the text-to-speech tool can ease pain by reducing pressure on your fingers. She and Dr. Enriquez also recommended phone grips and stands like those made by PopSocket and Moft, which can relieve much of the pressure of holding a phone from fingers and thumbs. Dr Cuéllar said it might help to use a stand that holds your phone at eye level, so you don’t strain your neck to see it.

If you’re in a lot of pain, it’s a good idea to see a physical therapist or doctor, such as an orthopedist or physical medicine specialist, because they can recommend treatments and stretches, Dr. Schwartz said. “If you catch these things early, they don’t tend to become chronic,” she said.

But if something hurts you, the easiest solution is to stop doing it so much. In other words, Dr. Wolf said, “the best advice would be: turn off your phone.”

Dear Héloïse: It was mentioned in an article about not answering the phone for numbers you don’t recognize, and you agree with that, and more importantly, you’re right. However, when I transferred my mother to an assisted living facility, I received calls from caregivers and nurses on their private cell phones reporting an incident with my mother. After not answering the first unknown number and then hearing the message about a fall, I asked my family to answer all calls as we have no way of knowing if this is his property or not . Most calls originated from the establishment’s recognized telephone number, but there were exceptions. —SC, Kentucky

Dear Héloïse: Some people wash iron cooking utensils with soap and water, which I understand shouldn’t be done. I scrub mine with a wire brush, rinse it with a bit of water, then dry it with a cloth towel. I then let it sit and air dry for at least an hour. Then I can coat it with a little olive oil if it looks like it could use some. Since I always coat the pan with olive oil before putting anything in the pan, I usually don’t need to do this. Thieves are targeting digital currency investors on the street in a wave of “crypto muggings”, police have warned, with victims reporting thousands of pounds stolen after their mobile phones were seized.

Anonymous crime reports provided to the Guardian by City of London Police, as part of a Freedom of Information request, reveal that criminals combine physical muscle with digital savvy to keep people apart of their cryptocurrency.

A victim said she tried to order an Uber near Liverpool Street station in London when attackers forced her to hand over her phone. While the gang eventually returned the phone, the victim later realized that his account with crypto investment platform Coinbase was missing £5,000 of Ethereum digital currency.

In another case, a man was approached by a group of people offering to sell him cocaine and agreed to walk down an alley with them to close the deal. The men offered to type in a number on his phone, but instead accessed his cryptocurrency account, holding him up against a wall and forcing him to unlock a smartphone app with face verification. They transferred £6,000 worth of ripple, another digital currency, out of his account.

A third victim said he vomited under a bridge when an attacker forced him to unlock his phone using a fingerprint, then changed his security settings and stole £28,700, including cryptocurrency.

In another case, a victim told police his cards and phone were stolen after a night out at the pub, with £10,000 later stolen from their account with investment platform Crypto.com. The victim was using his phone in the pub and believed the thieves saw him typing in his account PIN, according to the report.

“It’s a kind of crypto assault,” said David Gerard, the author of Attack on the 50 Foot Blockchain, a book about digital currencies.

Cryptocurrency transfers are irreversibleunlike a bank transfer, making this type of crime more attractive to thieves.

“If I get robbed and they force me to do a wire transfer, the bank can trace where the money went and there are all kinds of returns. You can reverse the transaction.

“With crypto, if I transfer it to my crypto wallet, I have your coins and you can’t get them back.”

He said the risks were exacerbated by the way some people manage their smartphone investments, without exercising the same degree of caution as with cash. “People keep stupid amounts of money in crypto accounts. They don’t think it’s money one way or the other.

Gurvais Grigg, a 23-year veteran of the FBI, now works as a director of public sector technology for Chainalysis, which helps government agencies and financial institutions track digital currency movements.

He said the nature of cryptocurrency, where transactions are recorded on the blockchain, meant that police should, in theory, be able to track stolen crypto.

“For [transfer stolen assets], they must provide a wallet address and most likely they will use this wallet address again in the future. You also need to take it to an exchange if you want to turn it into fiat currency.

He said it created a digital paper trail that investigators can use, and regularly use, to track down multi-million dollar crypto hacks. However, he said they were less likely to have the resources to prosecute smaller, one-off crimes.

“An individual theft of a small amount may not attract the attention of the police or a large law enforcement agency.

“If they could put together a bigger plot of activity, where people do it more than once or twice, the police departments would probably pay attention.”

The crypto attacks took place in the second half of 2021, in the relatively small part of London’s financial district patrolled by the City of London Police.

The incidents are not the first in which people have been forced to hand over cryptocurrency under threat of violence.

A student from Kent claimed last year that eight people stormed his university accommodation and forced him to transfer £68,000 worth of bitcoin at knifepoint.

Later that year, American tech entrepreneur Zaryn Dentzel told police he had been attacked at his home in Madrid by masked thieves. He said they tortured him with a knife and a stun gun before disappearing with millions of euros in bitcoins.

However, the nature of crimes reported in London last year – seemingly opportunistic street incidents akin to an assault on cash or valuables – present new challenges for police.

Phil Ariss, who leads the cryptocurrency team for the National Council of Chiefs of Police’s cybercrime program, said more training is being provided to police officers on a variety of crypto-related crimes.

He said the police are also looking for ways to educate the public about the need to be careful when accessing a crypto account.

“You wouldn’t be walking down the street with £50 notes and counting them. This should apply to people with crypto assets,” he said.

If you’re lucky enough to get along with someone you meet on a dating app, they’ll probably ask for your phone number. This is a sign that the person you matched with is interested and wants to get to know you by calling or even video chatting. Speaking of which, here are some ways to present your best self in video meetings.

Before giving out your phone number, remember that it can do a lot of damage when it’s in the wrong hands. Someone could use your number to log in to a leaked password or even intercept two-factor authentication codes. This is a significant cybersecurity risk, so you should take extra precautions.

Of course, you can tell the person you’re talking to that you’re not comfortable giving out your number yet. But they might take it the wrong way, thinking you’re suspicious or have something to hide. If someone you meet on a dating app wants to talk on the phone, consider giving them a secondary phone number.

There are many reasons why a burner phone number is so useful.

Getting a second phone number is easy. You can use it for shopping, social media, business and other purposes. But in the tricky world of online dating, it’s valuable.

Here’s why it’s such a good idea. You never know who you are talking to online; people often misrepresent themselves to create false hopes. Meet them in person and they might look totally different from their photos.

RELATED: Online dating and romance scams are on the rise in America

Worse still, they might put on a sweet facade on the phone, only to be mean and cruel in real life. Some matches can be fatal. According to Rolling Stonea 25-year-old man has died after a fatal affair with a cannibal on Grindr.

Of course, there are plenty of regular, well-adjusted adults looking to find love on dating apps. Keep sliding and have hope, but take precautions for your safety. One way to set yourself up for success is to follow our seven steps to online dating success.

Here are three ways to get a second phone number on the same phone. If you’re using it in an online dating context, give the person you’re talking to this phone number when they want to call or text for the first time.

Once you get closer, you can give them your real phone number and explain that you gave the engraver’s number out of caution. They will understand your vigilance if they are right for you. (They might even be impressed with your tech savvy!)

1. Get a free phone number with Google Voice

This free service gives you an additional phone number that you can use as you see fit. It works for phone calls, texts and voicemails – and it works nationwide and internationally. You can use it on your iPhone, Android or even your computer.

You need a Google account to get started. Follow these steps for your second free issue:

  • To download the application to your computer, go to voice.google.com/u/0/signup. You can also download the app for iOS or android.
  • Next, sign in to your Google account.
  • After reading the terms, proceed to the next step.
  • You will see a list of phone numbers. Select the one you want. (You can search for phone numbers from specific cities or area codes.)
  • Next, verify the number and enter a phone number that you can associate with your Google Voice account.
  • Finally, you will get a six-digit verification code. Enter it and you are set!

If that sounds good to you, here’s another trick to check out. Tap or click here for five ways to get the most out of your new Google Voice account. Of course, if you want another option, here are two more ways to get a free phone number online for texting, calling, and more.

2. Download TextNow on iOS, Android or Windows

You can also use a free app called TextNow, which lets you choose from a list of free phone numbers. You can talk and text with this number, but you cannot make a video call through the app. The developers support each other through ads, so you’ll have to manage banner ads at the bottom of your chats.

You should also consider the possibility that TextNow may make money by selling your information. In the App Store App Privacy sectionthe developers disclose that it may collect the following information:

  • Shopping
  • Contact information
  • User content
  • Location
  • contacts
  • Identifiers
  • Diagnostic

Although TextNow is transparent about what it collects, many apps aren’t so straightforward. Tap or click here for a few apps that have secretly collected data from millions of people. Check the list to see if someone has exposed your private information.

One of the coolest features of TextNow is that you don’t need an active mobile plan to use it. You can sign up with your email address or Facebook account to get a number. You can call or text any number, and your text will look like normal text on their phone.

You can also send text messages and make video calls on your computer. TextNow covers this base as well. Click the link here or below to get a free online phone number to text or call from your laptop or PC.

3. TextPlus is another way to get a burner phone number

With TextPlus, all you need is a username. It’s even less demanding than TextNow, which requires an email address. Like TextNow, it comes with ads, but you only need to spend a few pennies to remove them.

A cell phone is as much a business gadget as it is a personal device. However, implying a single number for both is amateurish and unnecessarily dangerous. The innovation in mobile phone technology and the many applications accessible in the mall allow you to easily obtain a subsequent phone number avoiding these problems completely.

Source: Medium

If your phone can recognize a second SIM card, you can obtain an additional number from your specialized cooperative. However, if you prefer not to use this option or cannot because you do not have optional SIM space, you can use second number applications allowing you to have both a personal number and a number professional on one phone.

Why get a separate business number?

First, it isolates your own chats and those of your company, while simultaneously protecting your private number. Plus, you won’t have to worry about who’s calling because the dedicated line recognizes it. To conclude, it makes you look like an expert.

Some second number apps may have a free adaptation or time for testing, so if you can, try them out before buying an arrangement. Also, be sure to read the fine print, as Unlimited Calls, Texts, and Texts spend most of the time between app clients.

Second Phone Number Apps for Small Business

Here are the 25 second number apps that you can use to add a next number. All of the following phone number apps are accessible for Android and iOS except LineUp, Numbers Plus, Second Phone Number, and Swytch which are only for iOS.

Nextiva App

The Nextiva application is planned in the light of independent businesses. The organization says the app is ideal for organizations and representatives who need to collate their correspondence. It tends to be introduced on any gadget associated with web. Whether you’re using a cell phone, tablet, or even a desktop, you can turn any gadget into a phone total with all the business correspondence highlights you want, including:

  • calls
  • Screen sharing
  • Video conference
  • Group calls
  • Group visits
  • Individual visits
  • SMS
  • Point of view coordination
  • Group presence
  • Contact the board

From a central step, you can manage all trades, depending on the organization. Assuming you want to catch someone, you can also see from the app who in your party is accessible at a random time.

SMS highlighting even allows you to forward messages via a company phone number. The message deals with opportunities or clients without worrying about getting your cell phone number. It doesn’t protect you at all, but it looks more professional.

The Nextiva app is essential for setting up Nextiva’s business phone administrations and is the ideal UCaaS arrangement, no matter the size of your organization.

GoDaddy Smartline

The GoDaddy SmartLine was reported in August 2017 by the region name organization. You can get a neighborhood phone number with a US area code in addition to adaptable voicemail, a choice of business hour ringtones and instant messages and the sky’s the limit from there. You can try it for free for 30 days.

Burner

Burner is one of the best-known applications for creating an auxiliary number. It was originally planned to be a short-lived act, however, lasting choices are currently accessible. The small burner will allow you 14 days with limited talk time and instant messages, while the super durable adaptation is a monthly plan, however long the number you want. There is also a three-line plan if you need more numbers.

the voice of google

With Google Voice, all you need is a Google record to get another phone number. Calls can be directed to your cell phone, PC, home, office, or other location. Notwithstanding the standard call features, the app also decrypts voicemails into messages.

Calm

Like Burner, Hushed has impermanent and super durable choices for your next phone number. It starts with a free number for three days, followed by seven-day and extremely long-lasting plans that you have to pay for. Highlights incorporate personalized voice messages and call forwarding.

Dingtone

Dingtone gives you a free US number so you can make calls or text to any landline or cell phone in the north of 230 countries. The organization uses its committed VoIP organization to transmit HD voice and sends SMS to share photos, recordings, areas and contacts. Annual and monthly subscriptions are available in the US, UK, Canada, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Free tone

Free Tone says it gives you unlimited free calls and texts to US and Canadian phone numbers when you get your number from any area code without any preliminaries or secret expenses. The organization uses VoIP innovation to transmit aid. Free calls only apply to the adjacent US and Canada, so be sure to check if you plan to call elsewhere.

Cover me

ATLANTA — A special grand jury was selected Monday to investigate whether former President Donald Trump and others unlawfully attempted to influence Georgia’s 2020 election.

The investigation has been ongoing since early last year, and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis took the unusual step of asking the special grand jury to assist him. She noted in a letter to the chief justice that the special grand jury would be able to issue subpoenas to people who otherwise refused to cooperate.

The chief judge ordered the special grand jury to sit for up to a year, beginning Monday. Of the group of about 200 people called from the county’s master juror roll, 26 were chosen to serve – 23 grand jurors and three alternates. Special grand juries focus on investigating a single subject and make recommendations to the district attorney, who then decides whether to seek an indictment from a regular grand jury.

Due to intense public interest in the case, the court has arranged for parts of Monday’s selection process to be broadcast live. Now that the special grand jury has been selected, everything they do will happen in secret.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney, who was assigned to oversee the special grand jury, told those summoned to the jury panel that they would not hear a trial, but instead would part of a special grand jury investigating actions surrounding the 2020 general election.

“Now is the time for 26 members of our community to take part in this survey,” McBurney said.

Willis confirmed his team was reviewing a January 2021 phone call in which Trump pushed Georgian Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” the votes needed for him to win the state. She also said they were considering a November 2020 phone call between U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham and Raffensperger, the U.S. attorney’s abrupt resignation in Atlanta on Jan. 4, 2021, and comments made during Georgia Legislative Committee hearings from December 2020 on the election.

It’s unclear what charges prosecutors will pursue

It’s unclear exactly what charges Willis might choose to pursue against Trump or anyone else. In a letter she sent to senior state officials last year, she said she was investigating “potential violations of Georgia law prohibiting solicitation of voter fraud, making false statements to state and local governments, conspiracy, racketeering, breach of oath and any involvement in violence or threats related to the administration of the election.”

McBurney said the grand jurors won’t start meeting until June and won’t meet weekly. They will be told in advance when they need to be there, and there is wiggle room if they cannot make it to each session, as only 16 are needed for a quorum, he said .

McBurney then led the 200 potential grand jurors into swearing in truthful answers about their qualifications.

He explained that grand jurors must be at least 18 years old, must be U.S. citizens, and must have lived in Fulton County for the past six months. Anyone who is or has been elected within the past two years, anyone who has been convicted of a crime, or anyone who has served on a jury or grand jury in Fulton County within the past year is not qualified to serve, McBurney said.

The inquest involves actions surrounding the 2020 general election, and it is important that grand jurors “bring an open mind to the process”, the judge said. Anyone who is already convinced a crime happened or not should say they have a conflict when asked, McBurney said.

After identifying other potential conflicts — for example, plans to be out of the country for an extended period, having to care for someone after major surgery — McBurney reviewed the top 100 potential jurors and their asked individually – addressing them only by number – to say if they have a conflict. A quarter of the grand jurors said they had a dispute, and the judge and prosecutors began interviewing them privately to determine whether they could be excused. Then he closed the courtroom so that he and the prosecutors could speak privately with those selected.

While the district attorney’s office will typically lead the investigation, grand jurors will be able to question witnesses who appear before them. If they believe there are other witnesses they would like to hear or documents they would like to see, they have the power to issue subpoenas.

Acres: 97,064 acres Containment: 32% Start date: April 19, 2022
Cause: Under investigation Total workforce : 1,020 Location: Located near the Gallinas Canyon Fuels: Mixed conifer

Strong points: High winds in the area caused the fire to spread rapidly east toward Las Vegas and south through Gallinas Canyon yesterday. The wind-driven race exceeded predicted spread rates, causing numerous changes in the status of evacuation and road closures. This dynamic situation will continue today, please watch for updates. Obey all closures and allow firefighting resources to work safely. Firefighters and public safety will continue to be the number one priority.

Operations: The fire made a significant push eastward during yesterday’s wind event. Exceeding predictive models, the rate of spread on the southern edge of the fire forced firefighters to retreat to defensible point protection around structures and other at-risk assets. The rapid spread of the fire led to rapidly changing evacuation levels and road closures. There is no red flag warning in effect for today, but temperatures and relative humidity will still make for a very active fire day, along with south/southeast winds, moving the fire to the north/northwest. Two new operational divisions have been established on the eastern and southeastern edges of the blaze, and firefighting resources have been reallocated to divisions where the greatest threat to homes and other values exists, in the purpose of containing the fire west of NM Highway 518 and keeping it out of Ledoux in the north. A focus on protecting structures and reinforcing defensible lines will be the focus of today’s operational period. Four scooper aircraft and eight helicopters will conduct aerial operations on the fire as long as weather permits. Two additional scooper planes will be added to the aerial assault later today. Remember that drones are still prohibited in the temporary flight restriction zone, indicated on the map. If drones enter the flight zone, firefighting planes are grounded.

Evacuations: San Miguel and Mora County Sheriffs are asking all residents in the fire area to remain on high alert for changes in evacuation statuses and road closures. It is imperative to respect the closures and follow the evacuation orders. Failure to do so may pose an additional risk to firefighters and the public Please follow the San Miguel County and Mora County Sheriff’s Facebook pages for the latest updates at https://www.facebook.com/smcso.nm and https://www.facebook.com/moracountysheriffoffice.

Weather: South to southwest winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph are expected this afternoon, pushing the fire to the north/northwest. Higher temperatures and lower relative humidity will increase fire activity in the region. There is another red flag warning in place tomorrow, May 1.

Restrictions: The Santa Fe National Forest issued a closure order and implemented Phase II fire restrictions to protect public health and safety during fire operations at the Calf Canyon Fire. The full closing order and map are available at https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/santafe/home. The Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) in place over the area has been extended to include the Gallinas Canyon area. The TFR also covers unmanned aircraft, or drones. If a private drone intrudes into the fire area, it will necessitate a pause in all aerial operations and impede firefighting progress, putting firefighters at greater risk.

Smoke: The Las Vegas area will see (USG) persistent smoky conditions in the morning, especially in low-lying areas. Changing to moderate conditions as south-southwesterly winds of 10-15 mph clear the area. Passage to the west-southwest in the afternoon. This will produce more smoke in the area late in the evening as the winds push the smoke up the valley. Mora will have (USG) smoke in the area changing to moderate at times. The area from East Mora to La Cueva will see (USG) smoke at certain times of the day. Fire activity around Rociada, Pendaries, Buena Vista and Sapello today will create unhealthy air quality conditions as fire activity and winds increase. An interactive smoke map to https://fire.airnow.gov/ allows you to zoom into your area to see the latest smoke conditions.

Information on future fires: The hours of operation of the Calf Canyon Fire and Hermit Peak Fire Information Office are 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The telephone number for fire information is 505-356-2636. The email address is 2022.calfcanyon@firenet.gov. Future fire information will continue to be posted on Inciwebthe SFNFFacebook and Twitter, SFNF websiteand the New Mexico Fire Information website.

Hillsborough County, Florida (April 28, 2022) – Hillsborough County Water Resources is upgrading its utility bill payment system for water, wastewater and reclaimed water customers beginning April 28.

Upgrading the online utility bill payment system will enhance data security and improve services. However, this change will require all customers to re-register their accounts for online and phone payments.

Customers who have already set up automatic bill payments through the county will see this service continue uninterrupted, but customers will still need to re-register to access the billing system to make changes. All customers who enroll in the new system will automatically default to more sustainable paperless billing and receive their monthly billing statements via email, with the option to opt into paper bills.

The online invoicing system allows customers to make an online payment, view up to 13 months of invoices and change account settings for services such as automatic payment, email notifications and paperless billing.

Detailed instructions for re-registration are available at HCFLGov.net/WaterBill.

The following information will be required to re-register:

  • The 10-digit water resources department account number
  • The last four digits of the Social Security number or federal identification number registered for the utility account
  • A valid email address and phone number to complete the required multi-factor authentication process

Customer contact details will also be used to distribute emergency alerts via SMS and emails.

Customers attempting to access the old system on or after April 28 will be automatically redirected to the new bill payment page to re-enroll. Technical support is available 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday by calling (813) 276-2700.
