Mumbai woman loses Rs 11 lakh to cyber fraud while trying to recover lost money ordering pizza and dried fruit

Mumbai: A senior citizen was allegedly duped out of more than Rs 11 lakh by cyber crooks when she tried to recover money she had lost ordering pizza and dried fruit online, police said on January 15 2022.

The fraud came to light when the woman recently approached the BKC Cyber ​​Police Station with a complaint, an official said.

Based on the complaint, an FIR under Section 420 (cheating) and other relevant provisions of the IPC and the Information Technology Act was filed against unidentified persons, a he declared.

According to the complaint, the woman, who resides in the suburb of Andheri, had ordered a pizza online in July 2021, and by paying for it on her phone, she lost 9,999 rupees.

Similarly, on 29 October 2021, the plaintiff lost Rs 1,496 while placing an order for dried fruits online, the official said.

In a bid to recover the money she had lost in those two cases, the woman contacted a phone number she found while searching Google, he said.

The fraudster who received her call assured her of her recovery and told her to download an app to her cell phone, which gave her access to her device, the official said.

The app gave the defendant access to the complainant’s phone, bank details and passwords, he said.

The fraudster transferred and withdrew Rs 11.78 lakh from the woman’s bank account between November 14, 2021 and December 1, 2021, he said.

The complainant soon realized that she had lost all her savings, following which she approached the police, the official said, adding that an investigation is underway to catch the fraudsters. cheated three times.
